The benchmark for wireless noise reduction headphones will evolve. A leak reveals part of its technical sheet and images reveal a new design.
Year after year, Sony manages to evolve its famous wireless noise reduction headphones. The WH-1000XM4 also stands out as the best headset in this area (read our test); making life difficult for its competitors Bose or Apple. To continue to reign, the Japanese firm is preparing its successor and could strongly review its copy. According to the TechnikNews site, the WH-1000XM5 is approaching and will mark a break with its predecessors. The headphones would inaugurate a new design to offer a more elegant rendering than the WH-1000XM4, rather reminiscent of the Bose Headphones 700. We made a strong choice on the part of Sony, who would like to modernize their headphones, without completely reinventing them. The choice of colors would also remain limited, with black and gold or silver/beige trends.
On the images broadcast online, we can see that the manufacturer has repositioned the three microphones. An NC/AMB (noise canceling/ambient sound mode) button would replace the “Custom” button. The headset would continue to offer a 3.5mm jack and USB-C.
The German site, which cites an anonymous “commercial source”, is not content with just a few photos. We also know more about some of the technical characteristics of the future WH-1000XM5. The headset would ship a new driver to improve audio quality; as well as new processors to manage active noise reduction (ANC). Sony would also switch from a Bluetooth 5.0 connection to the 5.2 standard. On the other hand, no details concerning its improvements have filtered.
The autonomy would be revised upwards
Sony would also progress at the battery level. The autonomy of the WH-1000XM5 would reach 40 hours with ANC, against 30 hours for the current WH-1000XM4. A progression of 10 hours which would be accompanied by a slightly longer charging time. It would take another 30 minutes for a full charge, about 3.5 hours. Like its predecessor, we can hope that the Japanese manufacturer integrates fast charging technology.
Towards a launch at the end of summer?
For the time being, we do not know when Sony will market its headphones and at what price. As always, such a leak should be taken with some caution, even if these changes seem relevant. Anyway, the WH-1000XM4 should bow out this year after two years of good and loyal service. Sony announced the current model in August 2020 and the WH-1000XM2 in September 2018. We can therefore expect a release at the end of summer, or at the start of the school year.
