Tomb Raider leaves Square Enix, but does not abandon Perfect Dark

The adventures of Lara Croft on console continue, despite the recent abandonment of Square Enix.

A few days ago, Square Enix surprised gamers around the world. Determined to try its luck in NFT and cloud gaming, the development studio has decided to shed all of its Western licenses. Shortly after, we learned that all of the studios concerned (Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montreal and Square Enix Montreal) had been bought out by Embracer Group, for a transaction estimated at $300 millionand judged to be well below the market.

What will become of Tom Raider?

Of the licenses affected, there was particular concern about Deus Exbut also for tomb Raider. The Crystal Dynamics studio had indeed announced on April 5 that a new opus was on the way. Currently under development, the game was to benefit from the technology Unreal Engine 5, considered the most powerful motor on the market today. Expected within a few years, the change in ownership of Tomb Raider could have threatened the future of the franchise. Fortunately, nothing has changed for the moment.

Good news for the fans, the project is maintained, and will continue its development at Crystal Dynamics. In a press release, the studio confirms: “Acquisition Provides Compelling Framework for New Releases of Well-Known Franchises and Original IPs, Including a New Tomb Raider Game“. No image has yet been unveiled, but we will have to expect to be amazed: “Our goal is to push the boundaries of fidelity and deliver the high-quality, cinematic action-adventure experience fans deserve from Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise.“.

It remains to be seen how the other licenses abandoned by Square Enix will survive this surprise takeover. For the moment, no additional information has been revealed. For its part, Square Enix remains discreet. The firm simply justified its decision by evoking its desire to turn to NFTs, blockchain and cloud gaming.
