After the zombies of The Walking Dead, AMC attacks vampires

The platform will adapt the Vampire Chronicles, the famous saga that gave birth to Interview with the Vampire with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt

Have vampires gone out of style? After the fever Twilight, few productions of the genre have hatched in recent years, at least that are convincing enough to become real phenomena. Recently is the movie Morbius, with Jared Leto as a Marvel antihero, who struggled to convince us.

However, these creatures of the night won’t rest for too long, since AMC plans to bring them back. The American chain, famous for having developed The Walking Deadwill adapt the literary saga Chronicle of the Vampiresalready brought to the screen by Neil Jordan.

This project is not new. After a feature film in the cinema, the novelist Anna Rice sold the adaptation rights to Hulu in 2018. The platform plans to make it a series, but the project will never see the light of day. In 2020, AMC enters the dance and acquires the rights as well as those of the saga The Witches of Mayfair.

Nevertheless, Covid obliges, AMC does not decide to start production until 2021 for a broadcast scheduled for the course of 2022. In the meantime, Anna Rice has died, leaving this new adaptation entirely in the hands of the channel.

Many changes are made on the side of the plot, and in particular for the temporality of the story. While the novel transports us to the end of the 18th century, the series chooses a more contemporary era. These bloodsuckers will not wander around in the 2000s, as those of True Blood. This time, we will visibly be transported to the last century, around the 1920s.

A new team

Exit Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, AMC is recruiting a whole new cast for the occasion. At the same time, it was hard to see the two stars of the big screen making an incursion into the small skylight.

Sam Reid (Hatfields & McCoys) should thus succeed Tom Cruise in the skin of Lestat de Lioncourt and will be accompanied by Jacob Anderson (game of thrones), who will play Louis de Pointe du Lac.

Behind the camera, several directors should follow one another. Levan Akin (And then we’ll dance) and Keith Powell (Dickinson) will feature two episodes each. Alan Taylor will intervene for a single chapter. The latter will also find an actor he knows very well, since he worked on Game Of Thrones at many times. So he shouldn’t be too upset.

As for the plot, little is known at this time. We imagine, however, that the story will deviate very little from its basic material. As a reminder, Anna Rice’s novel follows a journalist who is approached one night by a man claiming to be a vampire. He says he is ready to tell her the whole story of his life.

Throughout his story, which takes place mainly between the 18th and 19th centuries, he will narrate several important stages of his long existence, from his transformation to the moment when he finds himself in this hotel room in New Orleans .

AMC has shared first images, and we must admit that we are far from convinced. Attacking creatures like vampires is dangerous, we hope AMC won’t break their teeth there. From make-up to costumes and sets, it’s hard to imagine how this series will make you forget the film, now cult for anyone who loves fantasy and monster films.

In any case, we will be curious to discover the first episodes which are to be broadcast next fall across the Atlantic. For the moment, no French broadcaster has yet volunteered to add it to its offer.
